Here’s the truth:
You are a Son of God.
The word son in this context is not related to your biological make up, rather it speaks of your spiritual reality. You are an offspring of God, you came from God. He breathed His Spirit into you. You belong to God, you are His. Whether you are aware of it or not doesn’t change this fact.
The bible tells us that even before the creation of the world God chose us. When sin entered we rebelled and turned away from our Father and became slaves to the enemy we obeyed. God decided to adopt us back into his own family through Christ Jesus - Ephesians 1:4-5. God sent His Spirit of sonship into us because we are His sons.
Let’s look into scripture:
Galatians 4:6 “And because you are sons, God has sent the Spirit of his Son into our hearts, crying, “Abba! Father!”
Romans 8:15-16 “The Spirit you received does not make you slaves, so that you live in fear again; rather, the Spirit you received brought about your adoption to sonship. And by him we cry, “Abba, Father.” The Spirit himself testifies with our spirit that we are God’s children.”
Romans 8:9 - “you, however, are not in the flesh but in the Spirit, if in fact the Spirit of God dwells in you. Anyone who does not have the Spirit of Christ does not belong to him.”
The evidence of your sonship is the presence of His Spirit dwelling inside of you. Since we are all His sons, God’s desire is for all to receive His Spirit. The only way this can happen is through repentance and acceptance of Jesus Christ as your Lord and saviour. This is why Jesus tells us to go and preach the gospel and then to baptize our brothers and sisters in the world. God through you wants to bring all His children back home.
Your Role As a Son of God
Sons of God ought to please God by living according to His Spirit. The perfect example of this is in Christ. Matthew 3:17 - “And a voice from heaven said, “This is my beloved Son, in whom I am well pleased.”
Romans 8:8 - “Those who are in the flesh cannot please God. You however are not in the flesh, but in the Spirit…”.
There is a clear distinction between who can and can not please God. Think about it, if your mind is focused on the Spirit of God (who knows the mind of God), you are bound to live in the will of God and please Him in doing so. If you are focused on the flesh, you are destined to live a life of disobedience to the Spirit of God.
The life of a Son of God is a life lived in the Spirit. This is a life that is able to please God.
What satisfies the Spirit will not satisfy the flesh and vice versa. The difference between the two is highlighted even by what sustains them. Jesus says that man shall not live by bread alone (Matthew 4:4). Since man is a spiritual being then that spirit in man must be sustained by a Spirit.
The Spirit of God sustains our spirits through the Word of God. This is why the Holy Spirit will ‘speak whatever He hears’, He will ‘take what is’ Christs’ and ‘give it to you’ (John 16:13-15). The Spirit of God makes the mind of God known to you, He reveals and teaches you the truth of the word of God. Abiding in His word and producing much fruit is what pleases the Father.
The Role of the Spirit in Sonship
The Holy Spirit marks you as a son of God and then teaches you how to live like a son of God.
The Spirit of God shows us all things pertaining to the Word of God. The beauty of this Word is that it is the law of God’s kingdom and it is given to us to govern how we live. We, as sons, are to be rightly positioned with the law of the King. This is so important that the Holy Spirit has to teach us how to do it. The Spirit of God teaches us the word of God and therefore enables us to stay in right standing with God. This is what pleases God, a life led by His Spirit.
The Holy Spirit can not teach you if you are not willing to learn. The evidence that you are learning from the Spirit of God is seen in the fruit you produce and in your management of what God has given you. The Holy Spirit is teaching all of us how to look like our Father, the end goal is to be like Him in every area of life.
The Son and the Father Dynamic
Jesus Christ, the first born Son of God [Romans 8:29] came to show us what sonship looks like. “For I have come down from heaven not to do my own will, but the will of Him who sent me.” - John 6:38. The relationship between the Son and the Father was revealed to us, so that we would know how we ought to relate with our Father. We see through Christ that the Sons of God ought to:
Do the will of the Father
Learn from the Father
John 5:20 tells us that the Father is pleased to show the son all that He does. There is an important message in this verse, the idea of showing something to the son.
God is our Father and throughout scripture we see this same idea being repeated; God showing man what He is doing. We see this in Genesis with Adam, and even with Abraham. We see this also throughout the prophets, we see this through Christ and we see it in the things God revealed to the apostles and in the early church. God showing you what He is doing is a reminder to you that you are not just a servant of God, but a son!
Jesus says it this way:
John 15:15 - No longer do I call you servants, for the servant does not know what his master is doing; but I have called you friends, for all that I have heard from my Father I have made known to you.”
Summary
You are a son of God, the Holy Spirit in you bears witness to this fact. As a son of God there is work you have to do; look like your Father in your love, your stewardship, and your light . The Spirit of God teaches you how to do that! I pray that you are reminded today that you belong to God. Knowing that you are His, may you be excited and encouraged to please your Father by living according to His Spirit!

Represent Him Always.
